For a few years, makeup quietly asked us to look as if we were wearing none. Glass skin, concealer placed just so, a face so even it barely looked like a face. This autumn the mood has changed, and it feels like a long exhale.
Beauty editors, makeup artists and trend trackers keep landing on the same idea for fall 2026: personality over polish. Celebrity makeup artist Tim Quinn tells NewBeauty he sees a shift “away from perfection and into authenticity.” Here is what that looks like in real life, and how to wear it your way.
Skin That Looks Like Skin
Ultra glossy glass skin is making room for what Quinn calls healthy velvet skin, soft and breathable with a little life in it. The trade publication Happi describes a similar “cloud skin,” a blurred base where glow sits only where light would naturally land.
Makeup artist Mali Boykin, speaking to Coveteur, calls her version hybrid skin. Keep the centre of the face calm, leave luminosity on the high points, and add coverage only where your skin asks for it. If you live somewhere humid, as much of India is, this is a kind way to wear base makeup. Nothing needs to shine from forehead to chin.
Blush Goes Cool and Deep
Warm peach is stepping aside for cranberry, mauve, dusty rose and soft berry. According to Spate data reported by Happi, interest in cool toned blush has grown by more than 685 percent across platforms compared with last year.
To wear it, Boykin suggests building colour in thin layers and softening the edges so it reads as a natural flush. Makeup artist Allison Kaye likes placing it slightly higher than the apples of the cheeks and blending towards the temples. Want the simplest version? Use one shade on your cheeks and lips. It is called monochromatic makeup, and it takes about two minutes.
Rich berry, wine and plum shades also sit beautifully on many deeper and wheatish skin tones. Fall coverage written for women of colour lists berry lips and rich browns among the season’s key colours, and you will find plum and burgundy tones in most Indian drugstore ranges.
Smudged Eyes, Softened Lips
The smoky eye is back, only gentler. Quinn suggests espresso, chocolate, olive, plum or charcoal, all blended until no hard edge remains. Coveteur’s artists add gunmetal and cool grey to the list. Jamie Greenberg’s easy trick is to skip graphic liner, press eyeshadow along the lash line with a small angled brush, and smudge it softly.
Lips follow the same rule. Think berry stains, deep rose, and lip liner in taupe or mauve that is diffused so there is no obvious outline. Finish with a juicy gloss, which Greenberg points out needs no precision at all.
The Undercorrected Eye
This is my favourite trend of the season. Makeup artist Christian Briceno talks about treating the natural shadow around the eyes as part of the face, rather than something that must be erased. You can still conceal if you like, but there is no need to go several shades lighter than your skin. The goal is skin that looks healthy and a face that still looks like yours.
Fewer Products, Finished Properly
Quinn also notes that women no longer want a makeup bag crammed with products. They want fewer, better ones. TikTok agrees. Nelly Rodi’s October trend report highlights Project Pan, where creators use up what they already own before buying anything new.
The same report flags a less friendly trend: pseudo clinical “looksmaxxing” language that turns every feature into a flaw to be corrected. We will happily skip that one. Beauty here is about enjoying your face, not auditing it.
A Five Minute Fall Face
Skin: Dab e.l.f. Halo Glow Liquid Filter on the cheekbones and the bridge of the nose only, so the glow stays on the high points.
Cheeks and lips: Tap Lakmé 9to5 Weightless Mousse Lip and Cheek Colour in a shade like Plum Feather onto your cheeks, blend up towards the temples, then press the same colour onto your lips.
Eyes: Smudge a brown or charcoal shadow along the lash line with a fingertip. Messy is the point.
Finish: A swipe of NYX Butter Gloss over the lips. Shades such as Angel Food Cake (a true mauve) or Rocky Road (a wine) suit the season.
Fall 2026 asks for less control, not more. Smudge the liner, keep the freckles, let your eyes look like eyes. Wear what makes you feel like yourself, and ignore anything that makes you feel like a project.
